How to define your target customer segment

Use this when

You have a business direction in mind, but the people you want to help still feel too broad, unclear, or hard to describe.

In Icanpreneur

  1. Open your startup workspace and go to Builder.
  2. Open the task Refine Customer Segments and Customer Problems.
  3. In the Customer Segments step, review the segments currently listed and revise them if they are too broad, too vague, or not specific enough.
  4. Review the Suggestions generated by IVA and use the ones that are relevant to your direction.
  5. Use the guidance in Builder to define each segment as a real group of customers with shared needs, wants, behaviors, or context.
  6. Check whether the segment reflects people who are likely to care about the problem and be willing to pay for a solution.
  7. Review the validation feedback shown in Builder, and refine the segment if it is too generic or framed only as a job title or role.
  8. Keep refining until your customer segment feels clear enough to guide research, interviews, positioning, and go-to-market work.
  9. Confirm the step and continue building the rest of your business direction.
